The 00's
The Dark Knight
Plot: crime in Gotham is at an all time low. It is due, in part, to Harvey Dent and the GCPD but when a new villain emerges going only by the title, the Joker, everything that they have worked for has started to fall apart. With no other options they turn to their last resort…The Batman.
Total gross: $1,004,558,444
Personal thoughts: This is the best DC movie, period. Jared Letos Joker set up against this one is like… well it’s like this movie up against Suicide Squad. Heath Ledger gives an Oscar winning performance as the previously mentioned Joker. From the beginning this doesn’t feel like a superhero movie but instead like a crime thriller of epic proportions. I saw this movie when I was six and I absolutely loved it. Batman seems older in this movie, which is a good thing. If there was one superhero movie that is the best then it is this one.
The Lord Of The Rings
Plot: The one ring to rule them all has come into possession of a hobbit named Frodo Baggins. Gandalf tells him to take the ring to Rivendell, he picks up a few stragglers on the way and Strider, the mysterious ranger. Once he arrives, the Elvin counsel decides that the ring should be cast back into the fiery depths of Mount Doom. Frodo says that he will do it with the help of eight others; together they set out and form the Fellowship of the Ring.
Total gross: $871,530,324
Personal thoughts: I read the books in grade four and then watched the movies right after. This movie is a fantasy epic unlike any other but there is many movies based on these. Frodo and the Hobbits are some of my favourite characters in movies. Gandalf is ever present for moments of great power and knowledge. The optimal viewing experience is definitely the extended edition where it extends the movie to four hours.
The Incredibles
Plot: Bob Parr (A.K.A. Mr. Incredible), and his wife Helen (A.K.A. Elastigirl), are the world's greatest famous crime-fighting superheroes in Metroville. Always saving lives and battling evil on a daily basis. But fifteen years later, they have been forced to adopt civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs where they have no choice but to retire as superheroes to live a "normal life" with their three children Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack (who were secretly born with superpowers). Itching to get back into action, Bob gets his chance when a mysterious communication summons him to a remote island for a top secret assignment. He soon discovers that it will take a super family effort to rescue the world from total destruction.
Total gross: $633,019,734
Personal thoughts: This was my first Pixar movie ever and I used to watch it everyday [that is not an exaggeration]. The movie is a tale about a man going through a mid life crisis. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie that handles that any better. I used to pretend that my brother was Jack-Jack because my brother’s name is Jack. Every time I watched this movie I found a new favourite part, character or line of dialogue.
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Plot: “The Bride” is out for revenge after her old mentor and allies massacre everyone at her wedding putting her in a coma for four years. When she wakes up in a hospital she wastes no time to go take out her first target, O-ren Ishii aka Cottonmouth.
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Total gross: $180,949,045
Personal thoughts: I had a hard time deciding between Vol.1 and Vol.2 but in the end I had to put the first one. The first time I saw this movie I was mesmerized from the beginning all the way until the credits rolled. My favorite part of the entire thing is Uma Thurman’s performance as “the Bride”. She is brutal and a hate fuelled revenge machine that will butcher anyone to get to her target, of killing Bill.
Wall-E
Plot: Wall-E is the last robot on earth, seven hundred years after humanity left the planet for robots to clean up the mess they left behind. He spends most of his days cleaning until a scout named EVE appears and takes Wall-E on an incredible space epic.
Total gross: $533,281,433
Personal thoughts: This movie made me care about a little trash collecting robot… that is a testament to its greatness. I love how Wall-E is instantly smitten by EVE and will do anything for her; I mean this is easily one of the greatest love stories ever. The captain wants to do what’s right but Hal, I meant to say M-O, is constantly interfering with his plans.
