The 90's

Jurassic Park

Plot: After finding a mosquito trapped in tree sap a group of scientists recreate dinosaurs and make a theme attraction called Jurassic Park. Once the first group of tourists visits things start going horribly wrong.

Total grossing: $1,029,153,882

Personal thoughts: This is the monster movie of all monster movies. The effects are incredible and have held up even against today’s standards. The scene in the kitchen is one of my favourite movie scenes ever just because of the sheer feeling of suspense you get when watching it. Jurassic park is one of my favourite Spielberg films ever.

Forest Gump

Plot: A man with a low IQ has the biggest heart on the planet. As a child him and his best friend Jenny would always play with each other until one day she leaves. He then sets out to find her, leading him to become part of some of the most iconic events of the twentieth century.

Total grossing: $677,945,399

Personal thoughts: My favourite Tom Hanks movie has to be this one because the whole thing is about a man who is in the right place at the right time. He seems so realistic that when I fist saw it I thought that it was based off of real life events. If you weren’t paying attention to it you would miss well over half of the movies inferences and other things like it.

Toy Story

Plot: Woody is Andy’s favorite toy until his birthday when his parents get Andy a Buzz Light-year action figure. Buzz thinks that he is a real astronaut sent on a mission to earth. Andy tries to convince him that he is not while also needing to accept that kids move on.

Total grossing: $373,554,033

Personal thoughts: This may be my favorite animated movie ever. There is no singing in this kids movie, but this is when animators started making movies for adults as well as kids. Andy and Buzz are both great characters and they are made even more better because of all the supporting characters.

Pulp Fiction

Plot: Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega are two hit men who are out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace. Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his weight. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together comprising of a series of funny, bizarre and uncalled-for incidents.

Total gross: $213,928,762

Personal thoughts: I thought that this movie is incredibly interesting because it doesn’t take place in chronological order. Yolanda and Ringo open the movie with what appears to be an inconsequential restaurant robbery scene only to be concluded at the very end in spectacular fashion. Jules and Vince are my two favorite hit men of all time who appear so relaxed during their first moments but then in “the Bonnie Situation” they make an impression that will inevitably last forever. During the “Gold Watch” you see Butch encounter Marsellus Wallace and they end up working together in an unexpected turn of events. Marsellus Wallace might be one of my favorite characters ever simply because he is this shadowed figure for the beginning of the movie until he deals with Zed. Overall this is one of the greatest movies of all time. Also, meet me at the Big Kahuna burger if you want to talk about what’s in the case…

Good Will Hunting

Plot: In the whole of M.I.T. the smartest person is the janitor who often gets into bar fights and has run ins with the law. But when a teacher discovers his genius he gets bailed out except there is one catch that he doesn’t like. He will need to go to counseling.

Total gross: $225,933,435

Personal thoughts: This may be my favorite Robin Williams role ever. I liked the fact that he needed help as well as Will. I have watched a lot of things where people swear a lot but I don’t think I have ever heard a movie swear this many times. I’m not complaining but I just found it to be an incredible testament to the movie that people don’t remember the language and rather they remember the characters and the narrative.
